Environmental Protection Licences

Port of Newcastle operates three berths and performs maintenance dredging under the requirements of Environment Protection Licences (EPL), issued and regulated by the NSW Environment Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA issues these licences to the owners or operators of industrial premises under the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997. Licence conditions relate to pollution prevention and monitoring, and the implementation of best practice.

Maintenance Dredging

In September 2022 the Port was granted application for renewal of its 10 Year Maintenance Sea Dumping Permit with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. The permit provides the legal framework for Port of Newcastle to maintenance dredge the harbour to permit safe shipping and navigation. The new permit commenced and runs to 31 July 2032.

Capital Dredging

On 24 December 2013 the Port was granted a State Significant Infrastructure (SSI) approval (SSI 10_0203) for the capital dredging of 12 berths. Stage Two of the works comprises of an expansion of the existing Mayfield 4 berth.

Pollution Incident Response Management Plans (PIRMP)

Pollution Incident Response Management Plans (PIRMP) are a requirement of any site operating under an Environment Protection Licence. The document sets out the procedure to be followed in the event of a pollution incident at a site.

PIRMP have been prepared by Port of Newcastle for the sites below. These PIRMP have been redacted to remove personal information. Personal information within the meaning of the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998 is not required to be included in the parts of the plan that are made available to the public:
